Though pageants are becoming increasingly racially and ethnically diverse, they still largely celebrate women whose bodies and identities do not challenge these oppressive standards. In 2008, Abbey Curran, who has cerebral palsy, became the first woman with a disability to compete in Miss USA. In 2012, following public pressure to change its policy, the Miss Universe Organization began allowing transgender women to participate.
