Dark circles are just one of the many beauty nightmares we dread but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s because we haven’t been getting enough sleep. It is one possibility but if you’ve been snoozing enough yet they still appear, there could be other underlying causes – like your blood vessels under the eye being swollen or not draining properly. Perhaps you ate too much salty foods or it’s just allergies.
It could also be hereditary or ageing skin – which, sadly, you won’t be able to change. While you can’t help your genes, you can definitely start anti-ageing skincare if it’s the latter. And if those two don’t apply to you, here are a couple of things you can do to naturally get rid of your dark circles.
1. Coconut oil
Massage a few drops over your dark circles before you sleep and leave it on overnight. Rinse off with cold water the next morning.
2. Add a pillow (or two)
To prevent blood from building up under your eyes while you sleep on your side/stomach (thus waking up with panda eyes), switch your position to sleep on your back with an added pillow beneath your head.
3. Teabags
The tannin in tea bags can help to reduce swelling and discolouration so why not just pop some in the fridge overnight to cool them for use in the morning. Leave the cool (and damp) teabags over your eyes for 10 to 15 minutes.
4. Potatoes
Just grate a potato and extract the juice from it in a bowl. Soak two cotton balls in the juice and place one on each eye – make sure they firmly cover the affected area. Leave them on for 10 minutes before removing and rinsing with cold water.
5. Cucumber
Cut a cucumber into thin slices and place them in the fridge for about 30 minutes. Then, place each of them on the eyes and leave it on for 10 minutes. Remove and then rinse your eyes with cold water.
